Swallowed (2022)

Swallowed is the kind of lean, mean midnight thriller that takes a simple “one last job” premise and tightens it into a vise, mixing gritty desperation with skin-crawling body horror that feels both nasty and oddly intimate. Carter Smith directs with a nerve-jangling sense of momentum, letting the friendship at the center give the terror real emotional stakes, while Cooper Koch and Jose Colon make you believe these guys are clinging to each other as the night turns poisonous. Then Jena Malone arrives like a live wire, injecting the film with a dangerous, unpredictable energy that pushes everything into overdrive. It’s unapologetically graphic and will be too uncomfortable for some viewers, but if you can handle hard-R intensity, it rewards you with committed performances and a final stretch that hits like a fever dream you won’t shake for days.

Swallowed is clearly aiming for a grimy, body-horror thriller about friendship, desperation, and the ugly price of chasing a new life, and it doesn’t shy away from taboo imagery to make that point. The problem is it often feels like the movie is more committed to being provocative and uncomfortable than to building real complexity, so the tension can sag and the payoff may land as oddly underwhelming. If you’re not up for graphic, invasive gross-out scenes, harsh language (including homophobic slurs), and a generally mean-spirited vibe, this will feel like a long, unpleasant sit rather than a fun scare. That said, the performances (especially the central duo) give it some emotional grounding, and if you like nasty little midnight movies that go all-in on discomfort, you might appreciate its nerve even when it stumbles.
