Dead for a Dollar (2022)

Dead for a Dollar is the kind of lean, hard-edged Western they don’t make often anymore: a classic, dust-and-gunpowder morality play told with Walter Hill’s veteran confidence and a thriller’s forward drive. Christoph Waltz gives the bounty hunter Max Borlund a cool, watchful intelligence, while Willem Dafoe saunters in like trouble itself, turning every shared scene into a quiet duel before the guns even clear leather. The film moves with brisk, no-nonsense efficiency—sharp dialogue, clean geography, and bursts of violence that feel sudden and consequential—yet it still finds room for Rachel Brosnahan to bring real grit and agency to the story’s emotional center. If you want a sprawling, lyrical frontier epic, this may feel too stripped-down, but if you’re craving a smart, grown-up B-Western with first-rate actors and a satisfying sense of honor on the line, it’s a sturdy, satisfying ride.

The problem is that, for a thriller, it often feels oddly unhurried and a bit mechanical—scenes connect like plot checkpoints rather than tightening the screws, so the suspense and emotional punch you want from this setup don’t consistently land. If you’re expecting a lean, high-tension ride or deep character subtext, this may feel like a handsome but undercooked throwback. Still, if you simply want competent shootouts, a solid cast, and a straightforward Walter Hill-style Western that doesn’t overcomplicate itself, it’s an easy enough watch—just don’t go in expecting fireworks.
