Tamara Drewe is the kind of smart, mischievous British comedy that sneaks up on you with its sunshine-and-thorns charm: a postcard-pretty countryside setting where everyone’s manners are polished and everyone’s desires are not. Stephen Frears turns Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel into a brisk, gossipy satire of writers, romantics, and attention-seekers, letting the humor spring from sharp observation rather than forced punchlines. Gemma Arterton makes Tamara both magnetic and human, while the ensemble (especially Roger Allam) gives the village a lively, slightly wicked pulse that keeps the film humming even when it turns more cutting. It is raunchier and more profane than its quaint setting suggests, and it does brush up against darker consequences, but if you like your romance with bite and your comedy with brains, it’s a thoroughly entertaining watch.
