Private Eye is a rare kind of period mystery that feels both transportive and irresistibly fun, dropping you into 1910 Seoul with the bustle, grit, and unease of occupied Korea rendered as more than just backdrop—it’s the air the story breathes. Hwang Jung-min gives the detective Hong Jin-ho a roguish charisma, while Ryu Deok-hwan’s anxious medical student makes a perfect foil, and their uneasy partnership turns the investigation into a lively mix of suspense, wit, and forward momentum. The film’s pleasures come from how smartly it parcels out clues and complications, keeping you leaning in without ever getting lost, and how confidently it shifts between tension and lighter adventure beats. If you want a grim, relentlessly dark thriller, this may feel too playful at times, but if you’re on the fence, it’s an entertaining, intriguing whodunit with real atmosphere and a fresh setting you don’t see often.

Private Eye clearly wants to be a breezy period whodunit, mixing early-1900s occupied Korea atmosphere with buddy-detective banter and a ticking-clock murder mystery. The problem is the film can’t quite decide whether it’s a comedy or a thriller, so the humor undercuts the tension and the suspense never really tightens. Plotting is thin and occasionally holey, with a few “wait, how did we get here?” leaps, and the final twist tends to feel more awkward than clever. Still, Hwang Jung-min’s presence and the historical setting may keep you mildly engaged, but if you’re expecting a tightly constructed mystery or genuinely gripping crime thriller, this likely isn’t your best use of time.
