Abattoir (2016)

Abattoir has one of those deliciously macabre high-concepts that horror fans wish more movies would dare: a haunted house literally built from rooms where tragedies occurred, like a crime scene scrapbook turned into architecture. Darren Lynn Bousman leans into a shadowy, noir-tinged vibe—part investigative thriller, part supernatural nightmare—so the film feels as much like you’re following a reporter down a rabbit hole as you are bracing for what’s waiting in the dark. The visuals and production design do a lot of heavy lifting, turning each space into a grim little diorama of dread, and when the story finally funnels you into the labyrinth itself, it delivers the kind of distinctive, set-piece climax that sticks in the mind. It’s not for viewers who want subtle, slow-burn ambiguity—this one likes its horror bold and stylized—but if you’re on the fence, the sheer originality and atmosphere make it an easy recommendation for a spooky-night watch.

Abattoir is clearly trying to mash up a noir-ish investigation with a haunted-house concept built from literal “murder rooms,” and on paper that’s a terrific hook. The problem is the execution: the story lurches from clue to clue with awkward dialogue and pacing that drags, and it never fully decides whether it wants to be pulpy fun, straight horror, or supernatural mystery, so the tension keeps leaking out. Darren Lynn Bousman does deliver some creepy production design and a few striking images, and Lin Shaye brings welcome genre credibility, but the film often feels more like a rough draft of a better movie. If you can tolerate messy plotting for atmosphere and a genuinely original premise, you might get something out of it; if you need tight writing, clean rules, and momentum, this will likely test your patience.
