Attack the Block (2011)
A South London teen gang must team up with the other residents of their housing estate to protect the neighbourhood from a terrifying alien invasion.
What people think about Attack the Block
Attack the Block is special because it turns a familiar alien-invasion setup into a crackling, street-level siege movie with real personality—set in the fluorescent corridors and stairwells of a South London estate that feels lived-in, funny, and tense all at once. Joe Cornish directs with the confidence of someone who loves genre thrills but also cares about people, letting the humor land naturally while the action stays sharp and surprisingly suspenseful. John Boyega is magnetic, giving the film a beating heart beneath the bravado, and the whole ensemble sells the idea of a community forced into unlikely solidarity when the night goes feral. Fair warning: it’s loud, bloody, and very profane, but if you want a brisk, imaginative sci-fi comedy with bite and a distinctly British vibe, this one rips.
Attack the Block is clearly aiming for a scrappy, street-level sci-fi siege movie: kids trapped in a tower block, aliens in the corridors, and a redemption arc under pressure. When it works, it’s energetic and inventive, with John Boyega bringing real presence and the creature design doing a lot of heavy lifting. But the tone can feel stuck between comedy and horror without fully landing either, and if you can’t get past a story that starts by asking you to follow a teen gang right after a mugging, you may spend the whole film resisting what it wants you to feel. Add heavy profanity, gore, and drug use, and this is best for viewers who like rough-edged British genre mashups rather than clean, crowd-pleasing thrills.
