Kim Tae-hyoung stages the hunt with eerie, memorable imagery and a steady ratcheting suspense, while Lee Sung-min anchors the film with the kind of grounded performance that makes the spiritual stakes feel human. The writing takes its time building mood and character, so when the horror arrives it lands with weight, helped along by effects that serve the story instead of swallowing it. If you’re looking for a jump-scare carnival, this may feel too measured—but if you want a thoughtful, ominous ride that lingers after the credits, it’s absolutely worth the night.

The 8th Night is clearly aiming for a tense, mythology-heavy supernatural chase, mixing Buddhist-flavored lore with a gritty thriller vibe and a monk who looks like he means business. The problem is the storytelling can feel convoluted and oddly rushed, so instead of dread building cleanly, you may spend chunks of the runtime trying to keep track of who knows what and why it matters—something that can be worsened by clunky subtitles.
