Midnight (2021)

Midnight is the kind of thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t loosen its grip, turning the busy night streets of South Korea into a maze of dread where every glance and footstep matters. Director Kwon Oh-seung stages suspense with real craft and momentum, letting tension build through sharp visual storytelling and the terrifying awareness that help can be close by and still out of reach. Jin Ki-joo brings a grounded, fiercely human presence as Kyung-mi, while Wi Ha-jun plays the predator with chilling confidence, making the cat-and-mouse feel immediate rather than gimmicky. It’s intense and sometimes brutal, so it’s not for viewers who avoid violence, but if you want a fast, smart, non-exploitative chase thriller that keeps finding new ways to tighten the screws, this one delivers.

Midnight wants to be a lean, nerve-jangling cat-and-mouse thriller that puts you in the terrifying position of a deaf woman being hunted through crowded city streets, and for stretches it absolutely delivers that sweaty, street-level tension. The problem is it leans hard on familiar slasher-thriller shortcuts and some pretty convenient character decisions, so if you’re someone who needs tight logic to stay immersed, you’ll feel the gears turning. The final act, in particular, drags and starts reaching for bigger, louder beats that can tip into “really?” territory rather than escalating naturally. Still, the performances (especially the lead and the villain) and the sound-design-driven perspective shifts are strong enough that if you’re here for suspense over plausibility, you’ll likely have a decent time.
