Butcher's Crossing (2023)
In the 1870s, a young Harvard dropout seeks his destiny out West by tying his fate to a team of buffalo hunters led by a man named Miller. Together, they embark on a harrowing journey risking life and sanity.
What people think about Butcher's Crossing
Butcher’s Crossing is the kind of Western that strips the myth down to bone: a stark, hypnotic plunge into the frontier where the landscape is gorgeous enough to humble you and harsh enough to break you. Gabe Polsky shoots the West with painterly awe and creeping dread, and Nicolas Cage, coiled and commanding, turns Miller into a force of nature whose certainty feels both magnetic and alarming. The film’s power comes less from shootouts and swagger than from atmosphere—wind, silence, sweat, and the slow tightening of obsession until survival becomes a state of mind. It isn’t for the squeamish or anyone looking for a rousing, crowd-pleasing ride, but if you want a visually stunning, psychologically bracing drama that lingers like a bad dream and a beautiful memory at once, it’s absolutely worth the trip.
Butcher’s Crossing is clearly aiming for a grim, anti-romantic Western about obsession, survival, and the ugly cost of “destiny” on the frontier, and it doesn’t flinch from the brutality—especially the prolonged, realistic buffalo killing and skinning. The problem is it often feels like it’s marching through familiar Western beats without finding a fresh angle, and the storytelling can come off conventional even when the subject matter is trying to be profound. Nicolas Cage brings intensity, but the writing around Miller can feel thinner than it needs to be, which makes the later turns land with less impact than the film seems to think they do. If you want a sharp character study or a truly surprising payoff, you may leave disappointed; if you’re up for a slow, bleak, visually rugged trek that prioritizes mood and endurance over novelty, there’s enough here to justify a watch.
