Sweet & Sour (2021)

Sweet & Sour is special because it treats romance like something lived-in and bruisable, not a glossy fantasy—funny one moment, quietly cutting the next, and always tethered to the everyday pressures that bend people out of shape. Lee Kae-byeok captures the jittery push-pull of modern work, ambition, and exhaustion with a light touch that still lands hard, letting the chemistry between Jang Ki-yong and Chae Soo-bin feel both tender and uncomfortably real. The vibe is brisk and contemporary, full of small gestures, awkward silences, and the kind of humor that comes from recognizing yourself in someone else’s bad decisions. If you want a neat, purely comforting date movie, this may feel a little too honest—but if you’re in the mood for a romance that resonates because it refuses to pretend love is easy, it’s well worth the watch.

Sweet & Sour is clearly aiming for a “love gets messy in real life” rom-com that turns a long-distance relationship into a pressure cooker of work stress, insecurity, and temptation. The problem is the romance often lands sourer than intended: some early relationship beats flirt with stalking and boundary-crossing, and the gender politics can feel dated enough to make you question who the movie thinks you should be rooting for. If you want a warm, reassuring couple story or a healthy relationship dynamic, this may frustrate you more than it entertains. Still, the cast is likable and the film does capture the mundane grind of adulthood in a way that might click if you prefer bittersweet, uncomfortable relationship realism over fairy-tale romance.
