Fortress (2021)

Fortress has a lean, pulpy appeal: a “retired spies in a luxury hideaway” premise that quickly locks into a siege thriller and rarely lets up. James Cullen Bressack keeps the pace slick and the action satisfyingly direct—gunfire, close-quarters scrapping, and a high-tech bunker vibe that turns the setting into a pressure cooker—while the father-son tension gives the mayhem a little emotional edge. Bruce Willis brings a weathered, seen-it-all presence, Jesse Metcalfe plays the outsider trying to prove himself, and Chad Michael Murray clearly enjoys being the kind of villain who smiles as he tightens the screws. It’s not for viewers looking for realism or subtlety, but if you want an efficient, nasty little crime-action ride with a few sharp surprises, it earns its 90 minutes.

Fortress is clearly aiming for a lean, contained “siege in a high-tech bunker” thriller with a father-son reconciliation baked into the gunfire. The problem is it often feels like a bargain-bin version of that idea: the plot is stitched together from familiar clichés, the action is serviceable but rarely exciting, and the editing can make scenes feel oddly disconnected. Bruce Willis’s presence, which should be the anchor, comes off noticeably low-energy, leaving Jesse Metcalfe to carry more weight than the script really supports. If you’re just looking for a loud, R-rated time-killer with some shootouts and don’t mind a cheap look, you might manage, but if you want tight suspense, sharp writing, or a committed star turn, this probably isn’t worth your time.
