Monsters University (2013)

Monsters University is that rare prequel that earns its existence: it takes a familiar world and finds fresh, laugh-out-loud joy in it, while quietly deepening the bond at the center of the series. The movie zips along with bright, expressive animation and a campus-comedy vibe that’s playful rather than mean, fueled by the effortless chemistry of Billy Crystal and John Goodman as two monsters who are sure they’re destined for greatness—just not together. Beneath the jokes and the spirited competition, it has a surprisingly tender honesty about ambition, insecurity, and what it feels like to discover you might not be naturally good at the thing you want most. If you’re allergic to the college-movie trappings or prefer the warmer whimsy of the original, it may not hit quite as hard, but for most viewers it’s energetic, funny, and genuinely heartfelt family entertainment.

Monsters University is clearly aiming to be a breezy, crowd-pleasing prequel that turns Mike and Sulley’s origin story into a college underdog comedy, and on that level it mostly delivers. The problem is it often feels like Pixar on autopilot: familiar campus-movie beats, predictable competition plot points, and less of the emotional punch and inventive spark that made Monsters, Inc. special. If you’re hoping for big surprises or that “Pixar wrecked me (in a good way)” depth, this one may come off lightweight and a bit too tidy. Still, it’s colorful, consistently funny, and the character chemistry is strong enough that families and fans who just want an easy, energetic watch will likely have a good time.
