Filth (2013)

Filth is the kind of audacious, high-wire dark comedy that dares you to look away—and then wins you back with sheer craft, nerve, and a ferociously committed James McAvoy performance that feels like a man sprinting downhill in dress shoes. Jon S. Baird keeps the pace brash and propulsive, blending sleazy laughs with a creeping sense of psychological unraveling, so the movie plays like a bad night out that keeps getting funnier until it isn’t. It’s grotesque, energetic, and perversely entertaining, with enough style and bite to make its ugliness feel purposeful rather than empty shock. Fair warning: if you don’t have a strong stomach for explicit sex, drugs, violence, and a truly reprehensible protagonist, it may be too much—but if you can handle the heat, it’s a wild, unforgettable ride.

Filth is clearly aiming for a jet-black, feverish character study of a self-destructive cop, using grotesque comedy and hallucinatory chaos to drag you inside his spiraling head. The problem is it often feels like it’s trying so hard to be shocking and edgy that the psychological drama gets smothered by excess, with tonal whiplash that can make the misery feel more performative than revealing. If you don’t have a high tolerance for relentless ugliness—racism, sexism, explicit sex, addiction, and violence played for laughs one minute and tragedy the next—this will feel less “provocative” and more exhausting. The main reason to watch is James McAvoy going all-in with a fearless performance, but even he can’t make the film’s wallowing style feel controlled or consistently meaningful.
