Cat Run (2011)

Cat Run is the kind of shamelessly high-octane genre cocktail that grabs you by the collar and never really lets go, racing on pure momentum, punchlines, and close-call suspense. John Stockwell directs with a brisk, pulpy confidence, keeping the action clean and the comedy nervy as two would-be detectives stumble into a protection detail that’s way above their pay grade. The secret weapon is Janet McTeer, who brings a chilling, almost elegant menace to the assassin role—every scene with her tightens the movie’s grip. Fair warning: it’s aggressively R-rated with explicit sex and very graphic violence, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a fast, trashy, surprisingly well-driven action-comedy thriller, this one delivers.

Cat Run is clearly aiming for a slick, trashy Tarantino-style cocktail of hitmen, government corruption, and horny, hyperactive comedy, with Paz Vega doing her best to sell the “femme fatale on the run” hook. The problem is the movie confuses shock value for style: the writing feels secondhand, the jokes are hit-or-miss, and the violence is so relentless and graphic it stops being thrilling and just becomes exhausting. If you’re not specifically in the mood for an R-rated grindhouse vibe with severe sex/nudity and nasty gore, this will feel like a loud imitation rather than a clever ride. The main redeeming qualities are a few energetic chase bits and Janet McTeer leaning into the assassin role, but they’re not enough to make the chaos feel fresh.
