14 Blades is the kind of wuxia thriller that grabs you by the collar early and doesn’t let go, powered by Donnie Yen’s magnetic mix of steel-eyed discipline and bruised humanity as a loyal commander suddenly forced to survive the very machine he served. Daniel Lee stages the action with a classic, sinewy Shaw Brothers-style snap—clean lines, hard impacts, and a deliciously tactile arsenal—anchored by the film’s signature weaponry that feels both mythic and ingeniously practical. Beneath the chases and betrayals, there’s a surprisingly tender pulse: a wary, earned romantic tension and a sense of honor under pressure that gives the fights emotional weight, with Sammo Hung adding gravitas and swagger when he appears. It’s violent and relentless, and if you want grounded realism over operatic martial-arts spectacle it may not be your flavor, but if you’re on the fence and craving energetic, old-school swordplay with modern polish, this one is easy to recommend.

14 Blades is aiming for a classic wuxia thriller: palace intrigue, a loyal enforcer framed as a traitor, and Donnie Yen cutting a path through conspirators with a signature weapon gimmick. When it sticks to that, the fights have real star power and the Ming-era mood can be satisfyingly pulpy. The problem is the execution around the action—pacing drags, the plotting can turn murky, and the editing/CG-heavy moments sometimes make the combat feel choppy rather than clean and thrilling. If you want tight storytelling and elegant, clearly staged swordplay, this may frustrate you; if you’re mainly here for Yen doing heroic suffering and occasional standout clashes, it’s serviceable but not top-tier.
