Quartet (2012)
Cissy, Reggie, and Wilf are in a home for retired musicians. Every year, there is a concert to celebrate Composer Giuseppe Verdi's birthday and they take part. Jean, who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on, and it does.
What people think about Quartet
Quartet is special because it treats aging not as a punchline or a tragedy, but as a richly human encore—full of pride, fear, mischief, and the stubborn need to matter. Dustin Hoffman directs with an affectionate, unhurried touch, letting a dream cast of legends (Maggie Smith’s razor-witted diva, Tom Courtenay’s wounded dignity, Billy Connolly’s shameless charm) play off one another like old friends who know exactly where the laughs and bruises are buried. The vibe is cozy and gently bittersweet, a backstage comedy-drama where music and memory mingle, and where the smallest gestures carry the weight of whole careers. If you’re looking for high stakes or big twists, this isn’t that kind of night at the movies—but if you want something warm, funny, and quietly uplifting, it’s awfully hard to resist.
Quartet is aiming for a warm, crowd-pleasing celebration of aging, music, and second chances, anchored by a charming ensemble and Dustin Hoffman’s affectionate direction. The problem is it plays things very safe: the conflicts are neatly packaged, the emotional beats are telegraphed early, and it rarely digs into its heavier themes with the bite they deserve. If you’re hoping for sharp drama or surprising character turns, this will likely feel lightweight and a bit too polite. But if you want a gentle, cozy movie with seasoned performers (Maggie Smith included) trading barbs and building toward an uplifting concert finale, it does that job competently.
