Battleship (2012)

Battleship is the kind of big, loud, unapologetically earnest blockbuster that doesn’t pretend to be anything but a two-hour shot of cinematic adrenaline—steel, saltwater, and sky-splitting spectacle. Peter Berg stages naval combat with a satisfying sense of scale and geography, turning the ocean into a chessboard where desperation and ingenuity matter as much as firepower, and the international-camaraderie vibe gives the mayhem an old-fashioned crowd-pleasing pulse. Taylor Kitsch’s hotheaded hero arc is simple but serviceable, and the movie’s best trick is how it keeps finding fresh ways to make “ships vs. aliens” feel tactile and fun rather than weightless CGI noise. If you’re looking for subtle sci-fi or deep character study, this isn’t your port of call—but if you want escapism that commits fully to its premise and delivers the boom, Battleship is a surprisingly invigorating blast.

Battleship is trying to be a big, crowd-pleasing “navy vs aliens” spectacle with a simple underdog-to-leader arc and lots of hardware porn, and on that basic level it delivers noise, scale, and explosions. The problem is the writing is so formulaic and frequently nonsensical that the characters feel like placeholders between set pieces, and the movie often plays like it’s borrowing better moments from other sci-fi action films without earning them. If you need smart plotting, believable military decision-making, or any real emotional weight, this will test your patience fast. If, however, you can switch your brain off and just want glossy effects, loud action, and the occasional fun naval gimmick, it’s a serviceable two-hour adrenaline dump.
