Bird Box Barcelona (2023)

Bird Box Barcelona takes the franchise’s killer hook and gives it a fresh pulse by dropping you into a sun-bleached, eerily quiet city where every open street feels like a dare and every human encounter carries a shadow of doubt. It’s a taut, anxious ride that trades cheap shocks for sustained dread, letting tension build through smart world-building and a few genuinely jolting turns that reframe what you think you’re watching without tipping its hand. Mario Casas anchors the film with a performance that’s intense and quietly haunted, while the supporting cast adds just enough warmth and friction to make the alliances feel precarious and human. Fair warning: it’s grim, violent, and unflinching, but if you like your sci-fi thrillers with real teeth and an atmosphere you can practically feel on your skin, this one earns your time.

Bird Box Barcelona is clearly trying to expand the Bird Box world with a grittier, street-level survival story and a more psychological, faith-tinged angle, and Barcelona as a backdrop does give it a different texture. The problem is it often trades the original’s nerve-shredding tension for a slower, more predictable march from set piece to set piece, so the dread can feel oddly muted and a bit drab. If you’re hoping for a fresh twist that justifies the spin-off, you may find it underwhelming and a little too comfortable retreading familiar beats. Still, Mario Casas brings commitment, and there are a few solid moments of atmosphere and moral unease that will work fine if you mainly want more time in this universe rather than a sharper thriller.
