It’s not for the squeamish—its intensity includes harsh interrogation—but if you like smart, twisty thrillers that prize performance and atmosphere as much as plot, this one delivers.

The Message wants to be a sleek, claustrophobic wartime whodunit where paranoia, loyalty, and survival collide inside one mansion, and on that level the premise is genuinely gripping. The problem is it often tries so hard to look stylish that the tension gets undercut by showy camerawork, flashy CGI, and an attention-grabbing opening that can feel like it’s performing for you instead of pulling you into the story. If you like restrained, grounded thrillers, the visual excess and “look at me” polish may distract more than it dazzles, especially once the interrogations ramp up. Still, the cast sells the fear and double-crosses well, and if you enjoy glossy, melodramatic spy games with big cinematic flourishes, you’ll probably have a better time than the critics did.
