Disconnect (2013)

Disconnect is special because it turns the everyday glow of screens into a human thriller—one that feels urgently current without ever turning into a sermon. Henry Alex Rubin braids several lives into a single, tightening web, and the movie’s suspense comes less from twists than from the dawning realization of how quickly small online choices can spill into real-world consequences. The ensemble is terrific—Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, and Frank Grillo ground the film with bruised, believable emotion—so even in its darkest moments it plays like lived experience, not headline bait. Fair warning: it’s intense and tackles heavy subjects, but if you want a smart, gripping drama that leaves you thinking about connection long after the credits, this one lands hard.

Disconnect is clearly trying to be a modern-day cautionary tale about how technology can isolate, exploit, and hurt people, using multiple interconnected storylines to show the ripple effects. The problem is it often feels like it’s underlining its point with a thick marker—earnest to the point of preachy—so the drama can slide into melodrama rather than something truly lived-in. The ensemble cast (especially Jason Bateman) gives it some grounding, and a few scenes land with real sting, but the structure can feel scattered and a bit familiar if you’ve seen other “crash” dramas. If you’re sensitive to intense material involving cyberbullying, attempted suicide, and sexual exploitation, or you want subtle character work over message-driven storytelling, this may feel more punishing than rewarding.
