Big Miracle (2012)
A small-town news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle.
What people think about Big Miracle
Big Miracle is the kind of crowd-pleaser that earns its tears the old-fashioned way: by letting decency, determination, and a true story do the heavy lifting. Ken Kwapis stages the Arctic rescue with a brisk, cozy momentum that makes the freezing landscape feel both awe-inspiring and oddly intimate, while Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski bring a warm, lived-in chemistry that keeps the film grounded in human stakes. What really sneaks up on you is the tone—earnest without being preachy, charming without being corny—as unlikely allies collide, bicker, and gradually pull in the same direction. If you’re allergic to sentimental, feel-good dramas, you may find it a touch soft around the edges, but if you want an involving, family-friendly movie that leaves you a little more hopeful than it found you, this one delivers.
Big Miracle wants to be an uplifting, true-story crowd-pleaser about unlikely allies coming together to save trapped whales, and its heart is absolutely in the right place. The problem is it often leans so hard into earnestness that it slips into syrupy, made-for-TV sentiment, with dialogue that can feel cheesy and characters drawn in broad strokes rather than lived-in people. The pacing can be surprisingly laborious for a rescue story, and the direction doesn’t always squeeze the tension or nuance out of what should be a naturally gripping situation. Still, if you’re in the mood for a clean, gentle, feel-good film with a strong cause at its center (and you can tolerate a heavy dose of sincerity), it’s an easy watch; if you want sharper writing or a less manufactured emotional push, this probably isn’t for you.
