Arthur Christmas (2011)

For hundreds of years, the Claus family has delegated the title "Santa" to a chosen few of its members, which can be passed down upon retirement. Each Christmas, Santa and his vast army of highly trained elves produce gifts and distribute them around the world in a one-night high-tech operation. However, when one of 600 million children to receive a gift from Santa on Christmas Eve is missed, it is deemed ‘acceptable’ to all but one—Arthur Claus, the current Santa’s misfit son deemed ineligible for the title, who executes an unauthorised rookie mission to get the last present halfway around the globe before dawn on Christmas morning.

Explained

What people think about Arthur Christmas

Arthur Christmas is that rare holiday film that feels both freshly imagined and sincerely felt: a Santa’s workshop run like a sleek, high-tech operation, yet powered by one stubbornly big heart. It zips along with Aardman’s playful inventiveness and warm, clever humor, while James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, and Bill Nighy give the characters a lived-in charm that makes the family squabbles as funny as they are recognizable. The vibe is a buoyant, fast-paced Christmas caper with just enough emotion to sneak up on you, anchored by the simple idea that one “small” mistake can matter enormously to the person on the receiving end. If you prefer your seasonal stories purely cozy and traditional, the gadgetry and chaos might not be your flavor—but if you want a modern classic that earns its sentiment without getting syrupy, this one delivers.
