Explained

What people think about Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is the kind of movie that grabs a dusty old fairy tale, dips it in black humor and gunpowder, and dares you not to have a good time. Tommy Wirkola directs with a gleefully excessive, B-movie swagger—everything is loud, fast, and splattery, but it’s also knowingly in on the joke, with wit that keeps the carnage from turning grim. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton make the sibling duo feel like bruised, battle-hardened pros, anchoring the mayhem with just enough attitude and charm to keep you invested while the film goes for broke. If you’re allergic to gore or prefer fantasy that plays it straight, this won’t convert you—but if you want an energetic, unapologetically pulpy action-horror romp, it’s a wickedly entertaining ride.
