Ripper Untold (2021)

Ripper Untold earns its keep by treating the Jack the Ripper shadow not as a history lesson, but as a moody, gaslit mystery where every corridor feels damp with dread and every conversation carries a second meaning. Steve Lawson leans into a surprisingly stylish Victorian London—candles, brown-paneled rooms, and murky interiors—shot with an elegance that still leaves grime under the fingernails, while the makeup and crime-scene detail sell the era’s brutality without turning it into empty spectacle. Jonathan Hansler and Phil Molloy make the central partnership compelling to watch, grounding the investigation in anxious, human performances that keep the question of “who” and “why” simmering. It’s not for the squeamish (there’s moderate gore and some nudity), but if you like period horror that plays like a detective story first and a nightmare second, this one is an easy recommendation.

Ripper Untold is clearly aiming for a gritty, alternative take on the Jack the Ripper myth, mixing a detective procedural with a personal “dark secret” angle and a few splashes of period nastiness. The problem is it often feels more like a small stage play than Victorian London: limited locations, sparse streets, and a lot of flat shot-reverse-shot dialogue that drains tension instead of building it. There are some decently grisly tableaus and the central duo has enough friction to keep things moving, but long dull patches and a thin sense of atmosphere make the whole mystery feel smaller than it should. If you need rich period immersion, varied set pieces, or escalating dread, this will likely disappoint; if you can tolerate a low-budget, talky Ripper riff for the twisty concept, you might get just enough out of it.
