Christian Tafdrup directs with unnerving precision, letting small social slights and awkward silences curdle into dread, while the performances (especially Fedja van Huêt’s casually domineering charm) keep the tension grounded in believable human behavior. The vibe is chilly, realistic, and suffocating rather than flashy, with a sharp satirical bite about the things we tolerate just to avoid seeming rude. Fair warning: it’s a grim, intense watch with harsh content, but if you’re drawn to horror that lingers in your mind because it says something about us, this one is hard to shake and absolutely worth the plunge.

Speak No Evil is aiming for a razor-sharp social nightmare: a slow-burn thriller about how politeness and conflict-avoidance can become a trap. For a good stretch it’s genuinely uncomfortable in a “why won’t they just leave?” way, but that’s also the catch—if you can’t stand characters making passive, frustrating choices, this will feel like two hours of self-inflicted misery. The final act goes hard on bleak shock and cruelty, and for some viewers it trades the earlier psychological tension for something more blunt and punishing. If you want catharsis, clever reversals, or even a hint of mercy, skip it; if you can handle a mean-spirited, anxiety-soaked parable with strong performances and a suffocating mood, it does deliver that.
