Stone (2010)

Stone is the kind of adult thriller Hollywood makes too rarely now: a slow-burn psychological chess match where every glance feels like a move and every conversation has teeth. Robert De Niro brings weary, end-of-the-road gravity to a parole officer counting down to retirement, while Edward Norton turns his inmate into a coiled riddle—charming, unsettling, and impossible to read—so their scenes crackle with a tense, intimate electricity. The movie’s pleasure is in how it lets motives blur and moral certainty erode, trading cheap twists for character-driven suspense and a simmering atmosphere of corruption and desire. It won’t satisfy viewers looking for clean heroes or nonstop action, but if you like dramas that get under your skin and stay there, this one is worth the gamble.

Stone is clearly aiming for a sweaty, morally murky cat-and-mouse thriller about manipulation, faith, and midlife rot, with big-name actors trying to sell the slow-burn tension. The problem is the story keeps piling on motives and side threads without knitting them together, so what should feel like escalating deception often lands as confusing and oddly sloppy. You’ll also have to tolerate an ending that leans into ambiguity in a way that can feel less “provocative” and more “unfinished,” with performances that swing between committed and strangely flat.
