Io Capitano (2023)
Longing for a brighter future, two Senegalese teenagers embark on a journey from West Africa to Italy. However, between their dreams and reality lies a labyrinth of checkpoints, the Sahara Desert, and the vast waters of the Mediterranean.
What people think about Io Capitano
Io Capitano is the rare migration film that feels less like a lecture and more like a lived epic—an adventure-drama with the sweep of a odyssey and the intimacy of a close-held prayer. Matteo Garrone places you beside two Senegalese teens as their dreams collide with deserts, borders, and the sea, and he does it with a humane gaze that refuses to turn suffering into spectacle. Seydou Sarr gives a quietly devastating performance, the kind that makes courage look ordinary until you realize how much it costs, while the images are so vivid you can almost taste the dust and salt. It’s harrowing and sometimes hard to watch, but if you can handle its realism, you’ll come away moved not by tragedy alone, but by the stubborn, radiant will to keep going.
Io Capitano is clearly trying to humanize a migrant journey through the eyes of two Senegalese teens, mixing brutal realism with a fable-like, almost mythic framing to make their ordeal feel universal. The problem is that this stylized approach can soften the raw edge of the subject, tipping into sentimentality and allegory just when you might want the film to sit in messier, more specific reality. At points the story moves like a checklist of horrors and obstacles, which can make the narrative feel mechanical rather than organically lived-in. Still, the performances carry a lot of emotional weight, and if you’re open to a visually controlled, parable-leaning drama rather than a strictly grounded social realist film, it may land much better for you.
