Mindcage (2022)

Mindcage is the kind of lurid, late-night crime thriller that knows exactly what it’s selling: a tense psychological chess match where the most dangerous mind in the room is already behind bars. John Malkovich gives “The Artist” a sly, theatrical menace that makes every conversation feel like a trap being set, while Martin Lawrence and Melissa Roxburgh ground the investigation with a bruised, determined energy that keeps the story moving even when it flirts with familiar genre grooves. The vibe is grim, pulpy, and deliberately heightened—more cat-and-mouse page-turner than prestige mystery—and it’s at its best when it leans into the uneasy bargain of relying on a monster to catch another. If you’re sensitive to disturbing violence and themes, this one may be too nasty to enjoy, but if you want a watchable, actor-driven thriller with a wicked streak, it’s an easy hook.

Mindcage is clearly aiming for a dark, prestige-leaning serial-killer mystery where the detectives’ best lead is a charismatic monster who thinks he’s an artist, and it wants that tense, Hannibal-style mind-game vibe. The problem is it often feels like a bargain-bin remix of better thrillers, with clunky dialogue, shaky logic, and a flat look that makes the whole thing seem cheaper than its cast deserves. Malkovich brings some unsettling presence and the premise has a pulpy hook, but the movie leans hard on familiar beats instead of earning its twists. If you’re sensitive to grim material involving murdered sex workers or you need tight procedural realism and smart writing, this is likely more frustrating than thrilling.
