You Again (2010)
History -- make that high school -- may repeat itself when Marni learns that Joanna, the mean girl from her past, is set to be her sister-in-law. Before the wedding bells toll, Marni must show her brother that a tiger doesn't change its stripes. On Marni's side is her mother, while Joanna's backed by her wealthy aunt.
What people think about You Again
You Again is a fizzy, feel-good comedy that knows exactly what it wants to be: a bright, bouncy collision of old grudges and new beginnings, powered by a game cast that leans into the silliness with real conviction. Kristen Bell makes Marni’s indignation funny and oddly relatable, while Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver elevate the “grown-ups behaving badly” subplot into a delicious second course, full of sharp timing and knowing glances. The movie’s vibe is broad and buoyant—slapstick spills into musical flourishes, and the cameos pop in like little gifts—so if you’re in the mood for something light, glossy, and cheerfully chaotic, it delivers. It won’t convert anyone who needs subtlety or realism from a rom-com, but for a breezy night in, it’s the kind of crowd-pleaser that keeps you smiling even when it’s being unapologetically ridiculous.
You Again wants to be a breezy, crowd-pleasing rom-com about outgrowing high-school wounds and choosing grace over revenge, and on paper that’s a perfectly watchable setup. The problem is the script leans hard on broad, recycled gags and mean-spirited escalation, so what should feel cathartic can come off petty and oddly misogynistic, with the women pitted against each other at every turn. Even with a stacked cast, most of them are stuck playing loud, one-note versions of themselves, which makes the emotional beats feel earned only in the last possible minute. If you like glossy, sitcom-style family chaos and can tolerate a lot of contrived humiliation for the sake of jokes, you’ll find a few charming moments; if you want smart writing, believable growth, or a romance that doesn’t run on spite, this will likely waste your time.
