12 Strong (2018)
A team of special forces head into Afghanistan in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks in an attempt to dismantle the Taliban.
What people think about 12 Strong
What makes 12 Strong special is its sense of immediacy: it drops you into the raw, uncertain first days after 9/11, when history was being written by small teams making impossible calls far from home. Nicolai Fuglsig stages the action with muscular clarity and real momentum, but he also lets the story breathe in the Afghan landscape—wide, harsh, and haunting—and in the uneasy alliances that make victory feel earned rather than inevitable. Chris Hemsworth brings steady resolve, Michael Shannon adds gravelly authority, and Michael Peña supplies the human pulse that keeps the mission from becoming just noise and gunfire. It’s a tough, R-rated war film with severe combat violence, so it isn’t for everyone, but if you want grounded heroism and big-screen battlefield craft rooted in a true story, this one hits hard.
12 Strong is clearly aiming to be a straight-ahead tribute to the first U.S. Special Forces team in Afghanistan after 9/11, mixing buddy-soldier camaraderie with big, boots-on-the-ground action. The problem is it often plays like a sturdy reenactment rather than a lived-in story: characters are sketched more than explored, and the geopolitics are simplified enough that the stakes can feel oddly generic. At 130 minutes, the film’s march from mission to mission can turn repetitive, with stretches that feel more dutiful than gripping. If you want a nuanced war drama with sharp perspective, this may leave you cold—but if you’re mainly here for competent combat set pieces, a respectful tone, and solid work from Hemsworth and Shannon, it does the job.
