Ride Along (2014)

Ride Along works because it knows exactly what it is: a brisk, loud, good-natured buddy-cop comedy powered by the friction between Ice Cube’s granite-stare authority and Kevin Hart’s caffeinated, rapid-fire panic. Tim Story keeps the night moving like a pinball game—sirens, setbacks, and escalating chaos—while the movie’s real pleasure is watching Ben talk himself into (and occasionally out of) trouble as James tries to scare the confidence into him. It’s not reinventing the genre, and if you’re allergic to broad humor or familiar action beats you’ll feel the formula, but if you want a PG-13 crowd-pleaser with steady laughs and an easy chemistry that carries you from one set piece to the next, this is a fun ride.

Ride Along is clearly aiming for a classic buddy-cop clash: the stone-faced veteran and the loud, overeager rookie learning respect over one chaotic night. The problem is it rarely rises above the most obvious genre beats, so you can feel the plot turning before it does, and the action-comedy rhythms often land like reheated leftovers rather than fresh gags or tension. If you’re not already sold on Kevin Hart’s rapid-fire persona bouncing off Ice Cube’s deadpan glare, this will likely feel formulaic and a bit lazy. That said, the leads do have enough chemistry to carry a few solid laughs, making it an easy, low-stakes watch if you just want familiar comfort food and don’t mind the predictability.
