Altitude (2010)

Altitude takes a wonderfully lean, high-concept setup—five kids in a small plane with something going very wrong—and turns it into an impressively tense, sky-bound nightmare that never lets you get comfortable. The film’s greatest strength is its atmosphere: the cockpit becomes a claustrophobic pressure cooker, and the dread outside the windows feels vast, unknowable, and satisfyingly Lovecraftian without drowning in exposition. Strong, grounded performances help sell the escalating panic, while the suspense tightens with the clean efficiency of a thriller that knows exactly when to reveal just enough. If you’re allergic to contained settings or prefer your horror explicit rather than eerie and suggestive, it may not be your altitude, but for fans of moody, supernatural suspense with a sharp twist, it’s an underseen treat.

Altitude wants to be a tight, single-location pressure cooker: five teens stuck in a malfunctioning plane while something supernatural closes in, and the setup is genuinely promising. The problem is you spend a lot of time trapped with characters who are written to be abrasive rather than compelling, so the tension often turns into irritation. The story leans on familiar beats and then muddies them with confusion, making the mystery feel more like a shrug than a payoff. If you can tolerate clichéd plotting for a few creepy visuals and the occasional burst of airborne panic, you might get some mileage out of it, but anyone craving smart character work or clear, satisfying thrills should probably land elsewhere.
