Wolves (2014)

Wolves has a scrappy, midnight-movie swagger that treats the werewolf myth like a coming-of-age bruise you can’t quite stop poking—equal parts pulpy horror and small-town action thriller. David Hayter keeps the pace mean and hungry, leaning into practical transformation effects and crunchy creature violence that feel refreshingly physical, while Lucas Till sells the confusion and rage at the center of it all. The vibe is tense, sexy, and knowingly campy without winking too hard, and Jason Momoa brings a predatory charisma that turns every confrontation into a dare. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to R-rated grime, but if you want a creepy, crowd-pleasing werewolf ride with attitude, this one bites down and doesn’t let go.

Wolves is clearly aiming for a gritty, modern werewolf coming-of-age story with action beats and small-town menace, and you can feel David Hayter trying to fuse genre pulp with a straightforward hero’s journey. The problem is it often plays more like a cheesy TV pilot stretched to feature length: the tone wobbles between serious and silly, the drama doesn’t land, and the werewolf look is more “rubber suit” than genuinely intimidating. Jason Momoa brings some physical presence and a bit of fun to the mix, and there are a few bloody moments that deliver on the R-rating, but the action is surprisingly tame and the plot hits familiar beats without much bite. If you want scary, inventive horror or sharp, convincing character work, this probably isn’t it—if you can enjoy a disposable, slightly goofy creature feature, you may get a passable Friday-night watch.
