Hesher (2010)

Hesher is the kind of grief drama that kicks the door in wearing muddy boots and a metal band T-shirt, and somehow leaves you feeling cleaner by the end. Spencer Susser finds a bracing, darkly funny tone that refuses easy comfort, letting sorrow and absurdity share the same air without turning the story into a lecture or a Hallmark hug. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is fearless and weirdly magnetic as the human wrecking ball who barges into a broken family’s orbit, while Natalie Portman brings a bruised tenderness that keeps the film from tipping into pure chaos. It’s loud, profane, and often uncomfortable—definitely not for everyone—but if you can handle its abrasiveness, it delivers real surprise, real sympathy, and a hard-earned sense of catharsis.

Hesher is aiming for a messy, grief-soaked coming-of-age story where an anarchic outsider barges in and forces a broken family to feel something again. The problem is it often mistakes sheer obnoxiousness for depth, leaning hard on ugly behavior, crude shocks, and contrived chaos that can make the emotional beats feel unearned rather than cathartic. If you’re looking for a sensitive drama about loss, or you have low tolerance for relentless profanity, sexual talk, and a grown man terrorizing a kid’s life as “therapy,” this will likely feel like punishment. That said, Joseph Gordon-Levitt commits fully, and there are flashes of tenderness (especially around Nicole) that hint at the better, more humane movie it wanted to be.
