Come Undone (2010)

Come Undone takes a familiar setup—love grown quiet, desire roaring back—and makes it feel startlingly alive through Silvio Soldini’s humane, street-level realism, the kind that notices the weight of a pause in a hallway as much as the heat of a stolen moment. Set against the everyday rhythms of Milan, it’s a drama that doesn’t judge its characters so much as patiently observes them, letting Alba Rohrwacher’s beautifully interior performance and Pierfrancesco Favino’s grounded intensity turn infidelity into something complicated, tender, and painfully believable. The tone is intimate and adult, more aching than melodramatic, with sensuality that’s frank rather than flashy. It won’t be for viewers looking for tidy morals or a soap-operatic thrill ride, but if you want a romance-drama that understands how people actually unravel—and why—they rarely make them this honest.

Come Undone wants to be a grounded, adult look at desire, routine, and the messy fallout of an affair in modern Milan, and it does have a realistic texture and strong, lived-in performances (especially Rohrwacher). The problem is that the story often plays exactly as you expect, leaning on familiar beats without digging deep enough to feel illuminating, so what should be emotionally combustible can come off oddly muted. If you’re looking for a sharp psychological romance, surprising turns, or big catharsis, this may feel slow, joyless, and a bit empty despite its sincerity. Worth a try if you like low-key, observational relationship dramas and don’t mind explicit sex and nudity, but it’s not the film to pick for freshness or momentum.
