Marmaduke (2010)

Marmaduke is the kind of bright, breezy family comedy that knows exactly what it is: a big, friendly Great Dane causing big, friendly chaos, with Orange County sunshine and a steady stream of canine culture-clash gags. Owen Wilson’s laid-back voice work gives Marmaduke an easy likability, and the supporting cast (especially Emma Stone and George López) adds enough snap and warmth to keep the movie moving even when the jokes are proudly goofy. The vibe is harmless and upbeat—more “Saturday afternoon with the kids” than “laugh-until-you-cry”—and it delivers simple lessons about belonging without getting heavy-handed. If you’re allergic to broad, slightly rude kid humor or talking-animal antics, it may not convert you, but for a low-stakes, feel-good watch, it’s an amiable, mildly witty romp.

Marmaduke is clearly trying to be an easy, sunny family comedy about fitting in after a big move, with a lovable giant dog causing chaos and learning a simple lesson about loyalty. The problem is it leans hard on the “talking pet + slapstick + mild gross-out” formula, and the jokes often feel recycled and stretched thin, so the movie can feel longer than it is. The CGI and animal antics can come off a bit awkward rather than charming, which doesn’t help when the plot is basically a string of park rivalries and messes. If your kids laugh at fart jokes and you just want low-stakes background entertainment, it’ll do the job; if you’re hoping for sharp writing, memorable comedy, or a story with real spark, you’ll probably wish you’d picked something else.
