Suicide Squad (2016)

Suicide Squad is at its best when it leans into the deliciously wrong idea at its center: a bunch of supervillains treated like disposable government hardware, swaggering into danger with nothing but attitude, bad decisions, and a flicker of humanity. David Ayer gives the film a neon-grimy, music-video pulse, and when the humor and comic-book lunacy click, it feels like a loud, mischievous late-night riff on the superhero genre rather than another dutiful chapter. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is a chaotic spark plug, Will Smith brings surprising heart beneath the bravado, and the movie’s rough-edged style keeps it moving like a reckless joyride. It’s not for viewers who want a clean, tightly structured story, but if you’re in the mood for energy, quirk, and mayhem with a wicked grin, it’s an easy ticket to punch.

Suicide Squad is clearly trying to be a swaggering, neon-lit antihero romp that introduces a bunch of villains fast, gives them attitude, and then throws them into a big supernatural crisis. The problem is it often feels assembled rather than directed: choppy editing, a plot that lurches from setup to set-piece, and character arcs that get teased more than earned, all smothered by a soundtrack that insists you’re having fun even when the story isn’t. If you need coherent storytelling, consistent tone, or a villain plan that makes much sense, this will likely annoy you more than entertain you. On the upside, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has real spark, a few action beats land, and the premise is still a fun idea—just not a cleanly executed movie.
