Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)

Green Lantern: First Flight feels like the rare superhero origin story that actually earns its sense of wonder, hurling you into a sprawling, color-soaked cosmic world and trusting you to keep up. It’s brisk, confident animation with action that has weight and imagination, and the voice cast sells the personalities—especially the simmering tension between Hal Jordan’s cocky rookie energy and Sinestro’s commanding intensity. The vibe is pulpy space-opera adventure with a surprisingly sharp edge for a PG-13 animated feature, more “intergalactic police thriller” than Saturday-morning fluff. If you’re not into comic-book lore it can move fast and get a little dense, but if you want a tight, faithful, big-scale Green Lantern tale that actually feels cinematic, this one lands.

Green Lantern: First Flight clearly wants to be a brisk, lore-heavy crash course into the Corps, with big sci-fi stakes and a clean, accessible origin story for Hal Jordan. The problem is it moves so fast that Hal’s growth can feel like a checklist rather than a journey, and the movie often seems more energized by Sinestro’s arc than by its supposed hero. If you’re hoping for deep character work, a gradual buildup, or a truly distinctive take on Hal, this may come off as efficient but emotionally thin. Still, the animation is solid, the action is punchy, and Victor Garber gives Sinestro real presence—so it’s worth it if you mainly want a tight, villain-driven Lantern adventure rather than a rich coming-of-hero story.
