Coriolanus is clearly aiming to make Shakespeare feel urgent and contemporary by dropping the play’s original language into a gritty, modern war-and-politics setting, and on paper that’s a bold, smart swing. In practice, the mash-up can feel mismatched and jarring: you’re watching news-footage realism while listening to dense verse, and if Shakespeare doesn’t already click for you, this won’t be the gateway drug. The pacing is uneven and the central figure is deliberately unlikable, which is the point, but it also means you may spend the whole film admiring the craft while not caring who wins.
