The Immaculate Room (2022)

What makes The Immaculate Room so gripping is how it turns a simple, almost game-show premise into a pressure cooker for the mind: one sterile white space, a ticking clock, and the kind of money that can warp your priorities in real time. Mukunda Michael Dewil directs with a clean, controlled intensity, letting the emptiness do the heavy lifting while Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth fill the silence with raw, believable cracks in confidence, love, and self-control. It’s a minimalist sci-fi thriller that plays less like spectacle and more like an unnervingly intimate experiment, where every “small” choice suddenly feels enormous. If you prefer action-forward thrills, the confined setting may feel deliberately slow, but if you like psychological tension that tightens one day at a time, this one sticks with you.

The Immaculate Room is clearly aiming for a sleek, Black Mirror-ish pressure-cooker about money, isolation, and how quickly a relationship can rot when you remove distraction and comfort. The problem is the movie often feels as empty as its setting: the pacing drags, the character choices can feel forced, and the twists land more predictable than provocative, so the tension doesn’t build as much as it just sits there. Bosworth and Hirsch commit, and the sterile production design is effective, but the script doesn’t always know what it wants to say, which can make the whole experiment feel muddled rather than unsettling.
