Emergency (2022)

Emergency is the kind of one-night movie that grabs you by the collar and never lets go, because every laugh is shadowed by the knowledge that the stakes are painfully real. Carey Williams threads comedy, drama, and thriller tension into a single escalating odyssey, and the script has the rare confidence to be funny without dodging the razor-edged racial calculus at its center. Donald Watkins, RJ Cyler, and Sebastian Chacon make the friendship feel lived-in—messy, loyal, impulsive—and that authenticity is what turns the suspense into something you feel in your gut. It’s intense, profane, and deliberately uncomfortable at times, so it won’t be everyone’s idea of a “good time,” but if you want a smart, electric ride that leaves you thinking long after the night ends, this one delivers.

Emergency is clearly trying to mash up a tense “one bad decision spirals all night” thriller with campus-party comedy and a pointed look at how race changes the stakes of calling the police. When it works, the setup is genuinely stressful and the performances (especially the central trio) sell the panic and friendship, but the film often feels like it’s juggling tones rather than blending them, so the satire and message can land softer than the premise promises. A lot of the run time relies on chaotic misunderstandings and repeated setbacks, which can start to feel more exhausting than sharp or insightful. If you want a hard-hitting political edge or a consistently funny ride, you may find it frustrating; if you’re okay with a messy, anxiety-driven night that’s more about discomfort than laughs, it’s a solid, watchable swing.
