3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is the rare “how did they even make this?” period romance that commits so hard to its outrageous erotic premise that it becomes a kind of lavish, naughty carnival—equal parts costume-drama sheen, broad comedy, and gleeful camp. Christopher Sun shoots Ming-dynasty decadence with a wink and a flourish, letting the film’s silliness and novelty do the seducing while still keeping a surprisingly old-fashioned heartbeat about longing, intimacy, and what people mistake for fulfillment. If you’re in the mood for something shamelessly excessive, frequently funny, and determined to deliver spectacle, it’s a memorable ride. But it’s absolutely not for everyone: the sexual content and violence are extreme, and the movie’s anything-goes tone will either feel like liberated farce or like too much, too often.
