Help (2021)
Sarah seems to have found her calling working in a Liverpool care home where she has a special talent for connecting with the residents. Then, in March 2020, the Coronavirus pandemic hits.
What people think about Help
Help is one of those rare dramas that feels less like a “movie about an issue” and more like a lived experience—intimate, urgent, and impossible to shrug off. Marc Munden’s direction drops you into the relentless rhythms of a Liverpool care home, and when the pandemic arrives, the film’s tension tightens with a night-shift stretch that’s as gripping as any thriller while staying fiercely human. Jodie Comer gives a raw, fiercely compassionate performance, and Stephen Graham meets her with aching vulnerability, turning their connection into the story’s emotional engine. It’s harrowing and sometimes angry, with strong language and moments that hit hard, so it may not be a comfort watch—but if you want a drama that honors care workers and residents with honesty and real cinematic power, this is absolutely worth your time.
Help is clearly trying to be a raw, urgent spotlight on how brutally unprepared UK care homes were when COVID hit, and it mostly succeeds because Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham make the fear and exhaustion feel uncomfortably real. It’s not an “enjoyable” drama so much as a pressure-cooker experience, with repeated stress, helplessness, and anger aimed at systems that failed vulnerable people. The main drawback is that the resolution can feel more like a pointed statement than a fully satisfying dramatic landing, which may leave you emotionally wrung out without the catharsis you’re hoping for. If you want subtlety, escapism, or a neat wrap-up, this probably isn’t for you; if you can handle a tough watch with powerhouse performances and a clear social message, it’s worth your time.
