Black Mass (2015)
The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.
What people think about Black Mass
Black Mass is the kind of true-crime drama that doesn’t just recount history—it makes it feel chillingly present, anchored by Johnny Depp’s astonishing transformation into Whitey Bulger, a performance so controlled and unsettling you can’t look away. Director Scott Cooper bathes South Boston in a cold, wintry dread, letting tension build in quiet rooms and casual conversations until the air itself seems compromised. Around Depp, a sharp ensemble—especially Joel Edgerton—adds moral corrosion and human texture, turning the FBI-and-gangland entanglement into something grimly intimate rather than flashy. It’s not a crowd-pleasing gangster romp and it isn’t interested in glamor, but if you want a riveting, serious crime film with teeth, this one bites hard.
Black Mass wants to be a cold, procedural true-crime descent into power, corruption, and fear, and it largely banks on Johnny Depp’s chilling transformation to sell the menace. The problem is the storytelling can feel oddly flat for such notorious material—more like a greatest-hits recap than a gripping, lived-in saga—so the pacing drifts and tension comes in spurts instead of building. Supporting players often register as sketches, which makes the world feel thinner than it should and leaves a lot of “we’re told this matters” rather than truly feeling it. If you’re after a propulsive gangster epic or deep character work across the ensemble, this may disappoint; if you can accept a grim, sometimes clinical crime chronicle with a standout central performance, it’s still worth a look.
