Last of the Wolves (2021)
After Shogo Ogami’s death in Hiroshima, Detective Shuichi Hioka successfully implemented Shogo Ogami’s plan, which was to control the yakuza to prevent further gang wars and save innocent people from getting harmed. Shuichi Hioka manages the criminal organizations, but, due to one evil person who gets released from prison, the situation drastically changes.
What people think about Last of the Wolves
Last of the Wolves is special because it treats the yakuza thriller like a live wire: tense, bruising, and constantly in motion, with Kazuya Shiraishi directing as if every scene might explode. It drops you into a Hiroshima where uneasy “order” is just another kind of danger, and Tori Matsuzaka’s controlled, watchful detective becomes the eye of a storm that turns nastier the moment an old evil is let back out. The movie delivers the kind of hard-edged entertainment that doesn’t coast on swagger—its thrills come from pressure, consequences, and sudden violence that feels meant, not decorative. If you want a sleek, sanitized crime story, this isn’t it, but if you’re on the fence about a modern gangster sequel with real bite, this one earns your time.
Last of the Wolves is clearly trying to be a hard-edged, morally messy Japanese crime epic—an extension of the yakuza world where “keeping the peace” means getting your hands dirty. The problem is it can feel more like a competent echo of better genre classics than a fresh jolt, leaning on familiar betrayals and power plays that may not land if you’re not already invested in this style of storytelling. It’s also not especially welcoming to newcomers: the politics, factions, and simmering grudges can be more frustrating than thrilling if you’re expecting a clean, standalone action ride. That said, the performances bring real intensity and the film has a gritty momentum, so if you like bleak, talky crime sagas with bursts of violence and moral compromise, you’ll probably get what it’s going for.
