Elegance Bratton directs with a poet’s eye and a documentarian’s honesty, finding flashes of tenderness and hard-won camaraderie amid the punishing routines, while Jeremy Pope gives a raw, quietly magnetic performance that makes every moment feel lived-in rather than “acted.” The film’s vibe is bracing but deeply humane—tough enough to sting, yet never cynical, and anchored by a fierce emotional current that keeps pulling you forward. It’s not an easy watch, especially with a brutal shower assault, but if you can sit with its intensity, it rewards you with a powerful sense of transformation and belonging that lingers long after the credits.

The Inspection clearly wants to be a raw, personal survival story about finding dignity and belonging inside an institution that’s built to crush difference, and that intention comes through. Where it stumbles is in the execution: the pacing can feel uneven and some emotional beats land with a thud, like the film is reaching for catharsis before it’s fully earned. It’s also a tough watch at times, including a brutal shower beating, so if you’re not up for intense hazing and cruelty, this won’t be your idea of a meaningful night in. Still, Jeremy Pope brings real vulnerability and steel to the role, and when the movie slows down to simply observe him navigating hostility and rare moments of connection, it’s genuinely affecting.
