Four Lions (2010)

Four Lions is the kind of lightning-in-a-bottle satire that shouldn’t work on paper and yet lands with startling precision: it skewers fanaticism not with smugness, but with the terrifying banality of incompetence, groupthink, and wounded ego. Chris Morris keeps the vibe nervy and propulsive, balancing laugh-out-loud absurdity with an undercurrent of real human sadness, so you’re laughing and then immediately questioning why you’re laughing. Riz Ahmed and the ensemble are so sharp and committed that the characters feel painfully recognizable—ridiculous, yes, but never treated as cartoon villains—and that’s what gives the comedy its bite. It’s not for everyone, especially if you’re sensitive to severe profanity or dark material around terrorism, but if you can handle provocative humor, this is one of the most original, intelligent comedies of its decade.

Four Lions is trying to do something gutsy: turn terrorism into a bleak farce that exposes how pathetic, confused, and dangerously human its would-be martyrs can be. When it works, it’s sharply observed and occasionally hilarious, with Riz Ahmed and Kayvan Novak grounding the chaos in characters who feel uncomfortably real. But the tone can feel wobbly—lurching from absurdist sketch comedy to sudden tragedy—so if you want a clean, consistent satire, you may find it uneven or emotionally jarring. Also, the severe profanity and the fact that the “jokes” sit right next to suicide bombing and accidental deaths make this one a hard pass if you don’t like comedy that dares you to laugh at the worst possible moment.
