The Best Man (2023)

The Best Man takes the deliciously simple “wedding weekend gone wrong” premise and spikes it with lean, old-school action energy, turning tuxedos and champagne into a pressure-cooker battleground. Shane Dax Taylor keeps the pace tight and the stakes immediate, letting the resort setting do double duty as a glossy getaway and a claustrophobic trap, while Brendan Fehr and Luke Wilson bring a likable, bantering camaraderie that makes you care who makes it out. Dolph Lundgren’s presence adds a reassuring dose of seasoned grit, the kind that signals this movie knows exactly what kind of Friday-night thriller it wants to be. It’s unapologetically violent and not shy about language or peril, but if you’re on the fence and craving a brisk, no-nonsense hostage-action ride with a fun buddy dynamic, this one delivers.

The Best Man wants to be a lean, wedding-crasher Die Hard riff where old soldiers snap into hero mode and turn a hostage takeover into a scrappy rescue. The problem is it plays like a checklist: predictable beats, slack pacing, and action scenes that too often feel oddly low-energy for a movie built on gunfights and urgency. Dolph Lundgren and Luke Wilson have enough natural presence to keep it from completely flatlining, but the script doesn’t give them much to do beyond coast through familiar tough-guy banter. If you’re happy with a straightforward, violent time-killer and don’t mind seeing a solid premise under-deliver, you might be fine; if you need suspense, surprises, or sharp execution, this probably isn’t worth your time.
