Trigger Point (2021)

Trigger Point is the kind of lean, hard-edged thriller that doesn’t waste your time: it drops you into a shadow world of covert operators and lets momentum do the talking. Barry Pepper carries the film with a weathered, convincing intensity, making Nicolas Shaw feel like a man running on instinct, bruised memory, and stubborn survival. Director Brad Turner keeps the pace brisk and the action punchy—sharp bursts of violence, tight confrontations, and a constant sense that someone is always a step ahead. If you’re looking for a glossy, deeply layered mystery, the script may feel more functional than surprising, but if you want a gritty, no-nonsense ride with a strong lead and plenty of propulsion, it absolutely delivers.

Trigger Point wants to be a slick, globe-trotting spy thriller about a burned operative pulled back into a shadowy “invisible” team, with betrayals stacked on betrayals. The problem is the script leans hard on exposition and convoluted double-crosses, so instead of feeling clever, the plotting often feels confusing and rushed, like key connective tissue was left on the cutting-room floor. Performances are serviceable (Barry Pepper brings some grit), but the characters aren’t given enough depth to make the twists land, and the short, abrupt runtime builds momentum only to deliver an ending that feels more like a stop than a payoff. If you’re happy with disposable action and don’t mind filling in gaps yourself, you might get a passable evening; if you want coherent mystery, strong character work, or a satisfying conclusion, this likely isn’t for you.
