Madres is the kind of horror film that gets under your skin because it isn’t just chasing scares—it’s channeling a very real, very ugly piece of history into something you can feel in your bones. Set in a sun-bleached 1970s farming community, it wraps its dread in gorgeous, oppressive visuals: creaking houses, whispered legends, and visions that blur the line between supernatural warning and human cruelty. Ariana Guerra anchors the film with a performance that makes every symptom and suspicion feel intimate, while the mystery tightens into a final act that’s less about jump scares than mounting, righteous terror. If you’re looking for a purely escapist haunted-house ride, this may feel heavier than expected, but if you like horror with teeth—and a reason to exist—Madres is absolutely worth your time.

Madres is clearly trying to fuse a supernatural pregnancy nightmare with a very real, ugly piece of history about medical abuse, and that intention is worth respecting. The problem is the movie often feels like it’s checking off horror beats rather than building dread, so the scares land as familiar and the story can come off a bit fragmented and lecture-y instead of naturally unsettling. If you want tight mystery plotting, genuinely scary set pieces, or subtle social commentary, this may feel like a strong concept delivered in a fairly by-the-numbers package. Still, Ariana Guerra commits hard, the period setting has an eerie, sun-bleached mood, and the underlying subject matter gives the film a sting even when the horror mechanics don’t fully click.
